no-reply? more like go-fuck-yourself

Lemon2 min read

If you're still using a no-reply address in 2026, you must hate money.

I keep seeing no-reply addresses used by small startups that pride themselves on excellent support. Excuse me, but what in the fuck are you doing?

Your transactional email should go straight to a human. Your transactional SMS should go straight to a human. 20 years ago there may have been technical reasons to use no-reply, but today those reasons are bullshit. Just forward that shit to your support people or your customer success team!

Truth is, if some asshole tries to reply to some email or SMS you sent, you should thank your lucky stars! That person wants to talk to you! Oh happy day! ☀️

...So why are you making it so much harder for them?

Put yourself in their shoes

They take the time to craft a thoughtful message for you:

From: wherearemypants@gmail.com
To: no-reply@yourstartup.com
Subject: HELP

I triedd log in, but my computer tyrned off???? wtf??

They hit send and immediately get a reply. god damn! that was fast! this company must have kickass support!!

Except when they open it:

Delivery Status Notification (Failure)
From: Mail Delivery Subsystem <mailer-daemon@googlemail.com>

Your message wasn't delivered to go-fuck-yourself@yourstartup.com because the address couldn't be found, or is unable to receive mail.

Wait, who is mailer-daemon? I try to send a thoughtful message to this company and now there are DEMONS in my computer??

And just like that, your customer hates you. enraged

That customer was about to tell you exactly what was broken, for free. Now they're gonna go tell all their friends instead.

"Now they're gonna go tell all their friends instead." this is bars. 100% agree with all of this. There's also a psychological piece here. There have been studies suggesting people will like you MORE if they started out not liking you, and then you change their mind, as opposed to if they liked you to begin with. So this is a huge opportunity for businesses to gain loyal customers who can later turn into free advertising. Looking forward to more Lemon rants :D
